The South Carolina Economic Development Institute (The Institute), formerly known as The South Carolina Economic Development School (SCEDS), will offer a highly interactive curriculum to this year’s participants, affording them a greater "hands-on” economic development learning experience. The Institute, a twenty-six year partnership between the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the South Carolina Economic Developers' Association, has graduated more than 1,075 participants since its inception.

About The Institute

The Institute serves to educate those who support and participate in economic development activities in their communities while providing unique and innovative development approaches for implementation in local communities. Attendees who successfully complete each of the 2016 Institute's four sessions will earn a Certificate of Completion.

Who Should Attend?


The Institute is open to participants from a wide variety of organizations and entities:

  • City, Town and County Councils
  • Local Economic Development Practitioners
  • County Economic Development Boards
  • County School Boards
  • Regional Economic Development Boards
  • Utility Companies
  • Local/State Government
  • Banks and many others

Schedule and Topics

The Institute is comprised of four two-day sessions held in different locations around the state.

February 11 & 12 - College of Charleston, North Charleston
Session I will provide participants with the tools to build personal leadership skills as well as methods to assess their community leadership. Attendees will gain personal communication skills and techniques necessary for interaction with the press and the public.

May 12 & 13 - DeLoach Athletic Center, Coker College, Hartsville
Participants in Session II will not only learn the importance of community development, but will also see first-hand how City Officials and business leaders continue to create an evolving economy in Downtown Hartsville.

August 11 & 12 - George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics/USC Upstate, Spartanburg
Session III will offer participants the basic elements necessary for making decisions when recruiting business and industry. Downtown Spartanburg and USC Upstate’s George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics will provide the perfect venue for this session.

November 10 & 11 - Hickory Knob State Park, McCormick
The final Institute session will focus on the basics communities must provide to be competitive in the business and industry recruitment game. Attendees will gain insight into such subject matter as: water and wastewater infrastructure, available industrial or business buildings, the importance of having ready and available sites and other necessary development components.

*Attendees who wish to earn an Institute certificate are required to attend all sessions in consecutive order beginning with Session I.
