Happy Holidays SCEDA Members,
December is a special time of the year for all of us as and it is no different at SCEDA. Personally, we relish in the opportunity to spend quality time with our loved ones and enjoy the season of giving. Professionally, it is a race to the finish line as we make the final push to surpass our goals, while at the same time taking stock of the last 12 months with a mindful eye on 2018.
For SCEDA, December marks the mid-way point of our fiscal year. With that, I thought it would be beneficial to provide you with a glimpse into the past while also letting you know our focus for the immediate future.
SCEDA hosted the Annual Conference this past May at the Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island and had record attendance. We will be returning to the Sonesta Resort on May 2-4, so please mark your calendars. Mark Warner and the Annual Meeting Planning Committee are planning a great event for us so don’t miss it.
The August Membership Meeting was held on the 24th and Richard Blackwell did a great job assembling an agenda including an Economic Developers “Lessons Learned” panel, an economic overview by Dr. Bruce Yandle, and an overview of SCBIO by CEO, Sam Konduros.
Our Mid-Year Meeting was held in Greenville on October 12-13 and once again, we shattered attendance records. Andrena Powell-Baker and the Mid-Year Planning Committee did a wonderful job of merging social networking opportunities with professional development.
With the holidays nearing, the SCEDA Board has been at work planning our upcoming 2018 events. Please mark your calendars for the following:
- January 4th, 11:30 to 12:30 at Nexsen Pruet office in Columbia: Local Economic Developers discussion on pending Alternative Energy Legislation led by House Ways & Means Chairman Brian White.
- January 10th, 5:00 to 7:00 at Capital City Club in Columbia: SCEDA Legislative Reception.
- February 22nd at Columbia Metro Convention Center in Columbia: SCEDA Membership Meeting followed by the Local Economic Developers Oyster Roast.
- May 2nd to 4th at Sonesta Resort in Hilton Head Island: SCEDA Annual Conference.
SCEDA always keeps a mindful eye on finances, and you can rest easy knowing that the dynamic duo of Mark Warner and Andrena Powell-Baker, along with the leadership of Andi Rawl, have done a masterful job of managing our resources.
A sound financial position is only made possible because of the efforts of our Membership Committee, let by Sandy Steele and Sponsorship Committee, led by Stephanie Yarbrough. SCEDA has broken our membership record this year with over 750 members, and many thanks to our loyal sponsors who have also made it possible to reach an all time high water mark for revenue.
December also marks the point in the calendar when our Legislative Committee kicks into full gear. Tushar Chikhliker, Sara Hazzard, and the Legislative Committee are tracking several pieces of legislation carefully, while trying to position the SCEDA Bill for passage this session.
The Public Relations Committee, led by Marty Baltzegar, have been working hard with SCEDA’s new PR firm, NP Strategy, to get the word out on the many great things SCEDA is doing. Our new relationship with NP Strategy is going well and we hope you’ll enjoy the new look of the upcoming newsletter, as well as a refreshed SCEDA website.
Given the holiday season, it would not be an understatement to say that the ‘reason for the season’ at SCEDA is our Local Economic Developers. Under the leadership of Josh Kay and the Local Economic Developers Committee, and David Swenson, who leads our Professional Development Committee, SCEDA is working hard to provide opportunities to meet the needs of our ED professionals through relevant programming and professional development opportunities.
Past SCEDA President, Nelson Lindsay will soon be sending out a call for nominations to the SCEDA Board and Awards & Scholarships. If you have an interest joining the leadership of the SCEDA or know of a great candidate, please consider making a nomination to the SCEDA Board. It’s a significant commitment, but one that is certainly worthy of your time.
In conclusion, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Holidays and a prosperous 2018. SCEDA is leading the charge into the New Year and I would like to thank you, the membership, for your commitment to SCEDA.
