About The Institute
The South Carolina Economic Development Institute -The Institute-- is South Carolina's leading economic development program. The Institute, a twenty-nine year partnership between the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the South Carolina Economic Developers' Association, has graduated more than 1,255 participants since its inception.
The Institute serves to educate those who support and participate in economic development activities in their communities while providing unique and innovative development approaches for implementation in local communities. Attendees who successfully complete each of the 2019 Institute's four sessions will earn a Certificate of Completion.

The Institute is open to participants from a wide variety of organizations and entities:

- Regional Economic Development Boards

Schedule and Topics
The Institute is comprised of four two-day sessions held in different locations around the state.
SESSION I – LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
February 7 & 8 - Palmetto Electric Cooperative, Hardeeville, SC
Session I will provide participants with the tools to build personal leadership skills as well as methods to assess their community leadership. Attendees will gain personal communication skills and techniques necessary for interaction with the press and the public.
SESSION II – COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
May 16 & 17 - School of Pharmacy, Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC
Participants in Session II will not only learn the importance of community development, but will also see first-hand how City Officials and business leaders continue to create an evolving economy in Downtown Clinton.
SESSION III – BUSINESS AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
August 8 & 10 - Palmetto Terrace, North Augusta, SC
Session III will offer participants the basic elements necessary for making decisions when recruiting business and industry. Beautiful North Augusta, SC and the Palmetto Terrace will provide the perfect venue for this session.
SESSION IV – PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
November 7 & 8 - The Spark Center, Spartanburg, SC
The final Institute session will focus on the basics communities must provide to be competitive in the business and industry recruitment game. Attendees will gain insight into such subject matter as: water and wastewater infrastructure, available industrial or business buildings, the importance of having ready and available sites and other necessary development components.
