SCEDA Mentor Program

The purpose of the Mentor Program within the SCEDA organization is to provide a vehicle by which newer members (primarily) may more easily learn of and take advantage of the many offerings the organization provides to its membership.  This program is intended to be a peer to peer initiative by which guidance and assistance are readily available to allow the newer member to quickly become involved in areas of interest.  It will also help to impart the knowledge of older members to newer members in an effort to positively impact the effectiveness of economic development professionals and allies across the state.

The intent of this program is to provide a general format to allow for the mentoring of newer members in a fashion that works for the mentee and mentor.  While certain potential areas of assistance will likely be common among mentor/mentee pairs, the desire here is to provide a means by which such information exchange and coaching can take place in a fashion that works for each individual pair.  In other words, we want to provide some general guidelines for consideration but believe that the relationship developed will be determined for each pair and their unique needs.  We hope to pair newer members with longer standing members with similar backgrounds, job assignments, and geography.

Guidelines for Consideration

Ideas that each pair may want to consider as they form their mentor/mentee relationship include but are not limited to:

  • The history of SCEDA; the objectives of the organization; areas of focus
  • How the various allies work together as a team to attract investment & jobs to our state (role of DOC, regional alliances, county development agencies, and various allies)
  • Volunteer opportunities and the value of being active in SCEDA committees, meetings, etc.
  • Career guidance and coaching regarding various economic development career paths
  • Advice regarding educational opportunities available through SCEDA and other professional organizations including the benefits of SCCED and CEcD credentials
  • Trends in economic development
  • Issues and Initiatives in economic development
  • What resources are available to support the mentee’s career needs
  • Introductions to other members, “host” at SCEDA events
